Gas Pool Heaters
The Gas heater has an option to come in Natural or Propane. Gas heaters boast the ability to produce heat quickly which makes it a popular choice amongst pool owners. Gas heater units are designed for both above ground pools and inground pools. Gas pool heaters also come in Electronic or Millivolt (Standing Pilot)versions. Electronic versions are like a modern gas boiler and feature electronic spark ignition and micro processor control, thus giving you complete control of your pool temperature at the push of a button. Millivolt models are an older technology which uses a permanent pilot light and therefore is slightly less efficient, however does not require electrical.
Heat Pumps (Electric Pool Heaters)
Heat Pumps work by transferring heat from the surrounding air into the pool water, rather than generating heat themselves. In terms of energy used to heat they typically are more effiencent then a Gas powered Heater. These units require temperature's above 5C to perform efficently.
Solar Pool Heaters
Solar heater systems are installed along side the pool, directly on a fence or a top a roof and the pool water is pumped through solar collectors which are designed to trap solar energy. The water is heated through the system and returns back to the pool. They are the most energy efficient of all heaters, however are least responsive in terms of heating on demand. Solar Heaters are also the environmentally friendly choice.
